About Wolkins' History

Henry S. Wolkins portrait.Henry S. Wolkins' father moved from Bremerhaven, Germany to Boston in 1855. F.L.H. Wolkins was a fresco artist and calligrapher, whose work adorns many area churches, office buildings, and hotels, and has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His dedication to art was mirrored by his son's commitment to hard work and ingenuity.

As a grade school student, Henry S. Wolkins began working at Geo. S. Perry & Co.,a dealer of school furniture and supplies. Employed first as an office boy, Henry worked his way through the ranks of shipper, clerk, buyer and salesman. Henry's excellent reputation with various school superintendents and school systems gave him the confidence to purchase the small company when it became available.

In 1902, Henry merged with a furniture manufacturing company. The newly formed company was named Kenney Bros. and Wolkins. The partners were now able to offer stock and customized furniture to schools, as well as a full line of supplies and equipment. They worked together almost 40 years, expanding their sales into many areas of the Northeast. During this period, much of the equipment used in Boston area schools and colleges was installed by Kenney Bros. and Wolkins, including several new lecture halls at Harvard University and Harvard Medical School Early Kenney Bros. and Wolkins classroom chair with tablet. The late 1930's began a standstill in school construction that lasted over ten years. Cast metal was also replacing wood in much school furniture. In response, a decision was made to incorporate as Henry S. Wolkins Company, and phase out the production of furniture. A wide variety of ruled and graph paper was manufactured instead. It was offered to customers along with a full array of school supplies, including competing brands of furniture.

1974 marked a move from Boston to Walpole, MA. The company continued to prosper, and outgrew that facility in 1999. On the first working day of the new millennium Wolkins Company relocated to its new location in Taunton doubling their capacity. In 2006, Wolkins Company expanded once again, this time into the realm of retail by opening their first direct to public store, the Wolkins Learning Store.   Lessons learned and knowledge gained from selling to schools and universities over the years are now being applied to provide the best shopping experience for educators, parents, and students.  Dedicated, friendly, knowledgeable associates, and quality products in a clean, creative environment are hallmarks of the Wolkins Learning Store.
